All of Linwood’s luxury wallpapers are printed on non-woven wallcoverings, which offer a host of benefits over traditional paper options. ‘They are engineered using a blend of synthetic and natural fibres, making them more robust and tear-resistant compared to traditional paper,’ explains Matt Fletcher, commercial manager of John Mark, the state-of-the-art Lancashire-based company which prints all of Linwood’s wallpapers. He adds, ‘This durability ensures that non-woven wallcoverings have a longer lifespan, so they maintain their pristine appearance even in high-traffic areas or spaces prone to wear and tear.’ Luxury wallcoverings are also much more user-friendly, as they are hung using the paste-the-wall technique, which is markedly easier than pasting the wallcovering itself, and reduces the chances of creases, bubbles and misalignment. ‘When it’s time for a change, these wallcoverings prove their worth yet again, as their non-woven backing means that you can peel the wallcovering off in one piece, leaving minimal residue behind,’ points out Matt. Non-woven substrates also offer the chance to produce an extensive range of textures, adding interest to the finished design.

Wallpaper can instantly transform a room, bringing pattern and character to a scheme. The rise in popularity of wallpaper means that there is a huge array of styles available, and it is sometimes hard to know where to start. Consider the sort of patterns you gravitate towards – a botanical print is wonderful for bringing a sense of nature right into the home, while tropical and scenic designs can offer a transportive effect – and don’t believe that these designs are only for large rooms as they serve to bring a sense of depth, drawing the eye through the print. Metallic wallpapers are wonderful for introducing a touch of glamour and look particularly good in rooms that are primarily used at night (think dining rooms or snugs, for example). And if you wish to create a sense of artistic flair, an abstract pattern may fit the bill. Simple, neat prints, meanwhile, are incredibly useful for lending a touch of interest to a more quiet, restful scheme.

If you are nervous about using wallpaper for the first time, obvious places to start are rooms that you don’t spend too much time in, such as a guest cloakroom or a dressing room; these are also the sort of spaces that won’t require many rolls of paper. If you have fallen in love with a bold print but you are worried you may tire of it, consider using it in a transitory space such as an entrance or a hallway. Hanging wallpaper on all the walls will create a truly immersive effect, but a feature wall can also be very striking, or you might consider using wallpaper to highlight an architectural point of interest such as a chimney breast or an alcove. Use your chosen design to steer your paint colour choices: if your wallpaper features rich hues, pick out one of these colours for woodwork and joinery to enhance the effect.

Whatever your choice, it is important to look at wallpaper designs in situ, to see how the colours and pattern work with the natural light throughout the day. It is a good idea to move the sample to different walls to see how it looks in every area of the space. Remember that often, your wallpaper will be the backdrop to furniture and accessories, so consider it as a canvas – and don’t be afraid to hang pictures onto patterned wallpaper.

Non-woven wallcoverings have a natural resistance to moisture and humidity, making them suitable for a variety of environments. Unlike traditional paper, which can warp, bubble, or peel when exposed to moisture, non-woven options maintain their structural integrity. That said, if the room has poor ventilation and the environment is very humid, the wallpaper could become damaged over time, particularly if it is in an area prone to splashes. One solution is to apply a varnish to protect the wallpaper, such as Polyvine Decorators’ Varnish. It is important to test before application as it may affect the colours, so try it out on a sample piece or an inconspicuous area first.

Non-woven wallcoverings are easy to maintain as they can be lightly sponged using a mild soap solution. Always test an inconspicuous area of the wallpaper first and never rub or scrub at the paper, as this can damage the surface of the wallpaper. 

Linwood’s luxury wallpapers are printed using inks by HP, which is recognised as one of the most sustainable companies in the world. ‘The inks are water-based, and they don’t contain any solvents; they are supplied in contained digital units, ensuring that nothing goes into the local water supply,’ explains Matt, adding, ‘We are part of the HP Planet Partners programme, which means that all end-of-life equipment and supplies are recycled.’ The non-woven wallcoverings are sourced from reputable mills that use wood pulp from FSC certified sources. ‘These mills are working towards becoming more sustainable by replacing the fibre running through the paper, which is currently virgin polyfibre, with 100 % recycled PET fibre,’ adds Matt. Linwood’s approach to ordering is also highly sustainable: we hold limited stock and never over-order, ensuring that waste is almost non-existent.
